If you are interested in the Open School of Rochester and would like to keep updated, please join our Yahoo! Group. Members will receive notices of upcoming events, status reports, and other information of interest to those wanting to participate in the school. Members will also be able to discuss topics related to the school, for example, debating the merits of a rural or urban location.
The Open School of Rochester is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, so your donation is fully tax-deductible. If you are able to support our start-up efforts financially, we appreciate it.
We've heard from so many supporters, far and near, who do not have school-aged children. But there are kids who you can help send to the Open School. Buy a brick for yourself, or some who inspires you, and contribute to the Scholarship Fund. [Brick page coming soon, where your name or dedication will be visible. Contribute now and yours will be the first bricks in the wall.]
Use our aStore to buy great books on Amazon. Want to see an item listed there that isn't? Let us know and we'll add it. A portion of the sale benefits the Open School.
If you are able and willing to offer one of these services, please email us or leave a message on our voicemail (585) 219-8949 and we will get back to you as soon as we can! Willingness to work pro bono is not necessary, but appreciated.
A distinguishing feature of the Open School is that we plan to make available to our students a menu of offerings, in terms of courses, contacts, guest speakers, and hosts for off-site activities. Members of the community may advertise what they have to offer to the students. There will be several ways to participate, and participants may select any/all that appeal to them. Some would be temporary paid positions, others volunteer. Course offerings might be in traditional subjects (foreign languages, art, literature, geology, etc.), hobbies (model railroading, juggling, chess, etc.), sports, or just about anything. Courses may be set for almost any length or frequency: an hour daily for two weeks, every Tuesday afternoon for the whole year, whatever suits the subject matter. Courses might also build on each other. For example, a 6-week course in sign language might be immediately followed with another 6-week course, as long as students remain interested in continuing.
If you are interested in sharing your experience and passions with our students, you can either join the Yahoo! group to receive updates or visit this page again later. Once the Community Portal is established--anticipated Spring 2009--a link will be available here.
